Ars Magna Lucis Ombrae

Ars Magna Lucis et Umbrae is a video and laser mapping project presented on the bell tower of Sainte-Marie-Majeure. The work unfolds as a short immersive experience of approximately three minutes, exploring a dialogue between light and shadow, memory and revelation.

Inspired by the research of Athanasius Kircher, the project uses light as a tool to reveal the architecture, highlighting the relationship between the materiality of stone and the ephemerality of light, as well as the viewer’s perception.

Rather than a simple aesthetic intervention, the mapping offers a renewed reading of the monument. Through light, the sculpted details, volumes, and geometry of the tower are brought into contrast, emphasizing the interplay between shadow and relief, emptiness and form.

The historic bell tower becomes a space for a sensory and poetic experience, where light traces and transforms the architecture. The project invites the viewer to rediscover the building as a living surface, where heritage and technological expression meet.
